Struggling to Hear TV? Here’s What Really Helps

Watching TV seems simple, right? But if you’ve ever had trouble catching dialogue from the TV, you know it’s not always easy. Unlike a conversation with a friend, you can’t ask the TV to repeat itself or slow down!

Over the years, I’ve discovered a few strategies that really help - some of them make watching TV more enjoyable, even for people with normal hearing.

1. Subtitles Can Be a Game-Changer

I’ll be honest - I didn’t use subtitles for years. That changed when my son was little. He napped a lot, and I often held him while he slept. I wanted to watch TV without waking him, so I had to turn the volume way down… and suddenly, I couldn’t follow what was being said!

Subtitles saved the day. I could keep him asleep and still understand the story. Years later, I watched Les Misérables with subtitles and noticed all these small details I had completely missed the first time. Subtitles help catch the nuance in dialogue and can make your TV experience richer.

Even if your hearing is fine, subtitles are worth trying - they let you catch every word and enjoy the story more fully.

2. Reduce Background Noise

Our homes aren’t always quiet. Dishwashers, laundry machines, or even open-concept layouts can make it hard to hear TV clearly. Here’s a simple trick: if possible, schedule noisy chores for another time while you watch your favorite show or pause them for a bit.

Even small changes help. Moving a chair a few feet closer to the TV can make dialogue clearer and reduce frustration.

3. Wear Your Hearing Aids

If you use hearing aids, wearing them while watching TV is one of the easiest ways to improve clarity. They’re designed to improve speech clarity and that includes TV dialogue. Skipping them may make the sound muffled or frustrating.

4. Try a TV Streamer

If you don’t use hearing aids, over-ear Bluetooth headphones can send the TV sound straight to your ears.

If you do have hearing aids, a compatible TV streamer can do the same. This lets you hear the TV clearly at your preferred volume while the rest of your family enjoys it at theirs. Some streamers even work for both you and a partner if you have the same brand of hearing aids - perfect for couples who like to watch together without compromising on sound quality.

Small Changes Make a Big Difference

Watching TV shouldn’t be frustrating. These tips can make dialogue easier to follow and reduce strain.
